PORCH Communities founded by Christine Cotton in 2010, is a grassroots organization dedicated to combating food insecurity through neighbors helping neighbors. They organize monthly food drives, collecting non-perishable items and monetary donations for local food pantries. Eventually, they expanded to ten states with 2,000 volunteers gathering 1.3 million pounds of food in 2023 alone.
The initiative recently extended to Tennessee, with Anne Rico establishing PORCH Chattanooga in March 2024. This new chapter aims to foster community spirit and alleviate food scarcity through collective action. Volunteering is designed to be simple and requires only three hours a month. Through these small acts of participation, more residents will be encouraged to join in donating food and other goods to deliver to different local pantries in the city.
