The Impressions, one of the outstanding vocal groups in African-American music, formed initially as the Roosters along with the Brooks brothers, ventured to Chicago in 1957, where they met Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield which led to the creation of the band. Their early success came with the hits “For Your Precious Love”, “Gypsy Woman” and “It’s All Right.” They are known for their sophisticated sound and gospel harmonies, but they have also produced politically poignant songs such as “People Get Ready” until their 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Chattanooga Public Library’s Downtown location and Songbirds Foundation collaborated to showcase a year-long display of the new Impressions installation from June 27, 2024 to June 28, 2025. This exhibit celebrates the legendary music group which includes Chattanooga natives’ founding members, Fred Cash and Sam Gooden. New items from the collection will highlight the band’s significant role in America’s Civil Rights Movement.
So, don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn on their impactful journey and recognize their unique cultural significance to the community.
