Chattanooga has teamed up with Brewer Media’s Power 94 and Dynamo Studios to launch the Beats and Books literacy program, a creative initiative aimed at promoting literacy and fostering community connections among local students. The program specifically targets minority students by offering a unique blend of music and storytelling to spark enthusiasm for reading. Each month, hip-hop and R&B artists, celebrities, and influencers will read a children’s book while beats produced by students play in the background to enhance engagement and interaction. Moreso, this will improve educational resources by providing free printed materials to families to help promote a habit for reading.
Community involvement is also highlighted as the completed tracks will air on Power 94 during the 2024-2025 academic school year at 3:30PM on the first week of each month. Additionally, a limited number of copies of the featured books that were signed by the artists will be available at select library branches.
For its debut installment, rapper YGTUT will read the beloved classic “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket.” By incorporating music into literature, Beats and Books will not only boost fondness for reading but strengthen the community’s support for the city’s educational goals.
