The Walnut Street Bridge is more than just a pedestrian crossing—it’s a beloved historical landmark that unites the city’s past with its vibrant present. Being one of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges constructed using the Pennsylvania truss design in 1890, its incredible panoramic views of the Tennessee River and Skyline serves as a hub for community events and festivals. As a testament to Scenic City’s resilience and unity, the bridge was transformed from a deteriorating structure into a vital community space to symbolize its dedication to preserving cultural heritage.
In March 2025, the bridge will undergo a much-needed $35.3 million renovation to ensure architectural stability and safety for future generations. Funded by federal resources, local taxes, and economic development funds, the project includes structural repairs, fresh paint, upgraded lighting, and new decking. In addition, New York-based artist Ebony Bolt has been chosen to create a public art installation to celebrate the community’s diversity and connection. With alternative pedestrian routes planned and completion expected in September 2026, the Walnut Street Bridge remains a beacon of history, art, and community pride in Chattanooga.
