North Chattanooga is reclaiming its streets for community fun with the launch of the Play Streets initiative, a family-friendly program designed to promote outdoor play and neighborly connection. Hosted by the North Chattanooga Neighborhood Association (NCNA), they will temporarily close local roads to vehicle traffic, transforming them into a safe, car-free zone where children can run, create, and explore freely. Inspired by similar initiatives in cities like Seattle and Los Angeles, this will empower families to use public spaces with bubbles, chalk, and even cardboard forts. The inaugural event took place on Boylston Street last April 11 and with several more planned through October.

In a time when digital devices dominate and free play has declined, this is an alternative way to boost kids’ mental and physical health. The idea blossomed from a community book club discussion on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, highlighting the importance of outdoor interaction and the dangers of car-dominated streets. With clear rules—no pets, adult supervision required, and shared cleanup responsibilities—it aims to bring back the joyful energy of neighborhood playtime while fostering a stronger, secure environment. If you are a local resident or just looking to reconnect, Play Streets welcomes everyone to join the fun and build a better Chattanooga—one block at a time.
