Chattanooga is officially making history as the first city in the U.S. to establish a quantum computing and networking hub with a groundbreaking partnership between the EPB Board and global quantum leader IonQ. This collaboration will create a commercial quantum technology center by providing unprecedented access to various resources for research, development, and commercial use. Geographically positioned to serve as a catalyst to open doors for high-value advancements in industries like automotive manufacturing, logistics, energy, and finance. According to McKinsey Digital, such industries could realize between $1 to $2 trillion in value over the next decade through the adoption of quantum solutions.
This forward-thinking initiative strengthens Scenic City’s reputation as a tech innovation hub in the South and aligns with its mission to uplift the local community through cutting-edge infrastructure. With IonQ delivering its enterprise-grade quantum capabilities and EPB advancing its quantum network infrastructure, businesses in the city will benefit from optimized grid/route operations, enhanced cybersecurity, and energy resource efficiency. As Mayor Tim Kelly emphasized, this is a pivotal moment in shaping Chattanooga’s economic future. Completion of the EPB Quantum Center is expected by early 2026 which sets the stage to lead America’s quantum revolution.
