The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced over $2.4 million in Brownfields Assessment Grants for two Tennessee recipients—Franklin County and the Southeast Tennessee Development District (SETDD)—to transform underutilized and potentially contaminated sites into vibrant community spaces. This funding is part of a $267 million national initiative under the EPA Brownfields Program which aims to clean up and repurpose land for economic development, public health, and environmental renewal. Projects will include environmental site assessments, cleanup planning, and community engagement in cities like Winchester, East Ridge, Cleveland, and Dalton. Sites such as the former fairgrounds in Winchester could be revitalized into functional spaces that can bring a new perspective and economic opportunity to rural and underserved communities.
This round of funding marks a significant investment with the EPA highlighting that redevelopment improves public health, creates jobs, and supports sustainable growth. By transforming blighted properties, communities not only reduce environmental hazards but also spark investment and restore local pride. As Administrator Zeldin noted, the Brownfields Program demonstrates how environmental stewardship and economic progress go hand-in-hand. With over $42 billion in redevelopment leveraged since the program began, Tennessee’s latest grants reflect the ongoing effort to build resilient, thriving neighborhoods through strategic redevelopment.
