The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) has been awarded $1.46 million through the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s IMPROVE Transit Investment Grant program for State Fiscal Year 2026. The funding supports a series of strategic projects designed to enhance driver safety, improve infrastructure, and expand regional connectivity. According to officials, the investment reflects the state’s commitment to connecting communities, supporting economic development, and modernizing public transportation across Southeast Tennessee.
The grant will fund several high-impact initiatives, including the design of up to 33 mobility hubs across the CARTA network, protective safety barriers for all revenue vehicles, a state-of-the-art bus training simulator, and critical HVAC upgrades at CARTA’s Wilcox Boulevard facility. CEO Charles D. Frazier emphasized that these modifications will directly benefit both operators and riders by creating safer working conditions, more reliable service, and seamless connections to jobs, education, healthcare, and essential services. With the second-highest IMPROVE Act award among Tennessee transit agencies, CARTA continues to demonstrate strong leadership and a clear vision for the future of mobility in the region.
