The historic Walnut Street Bridge is finally starting to look like itself again. After months behind protective tarps, they have completed painting the iconic blue pedestrian bridge, marking a major milestone in the ongoing renovation project. With the tarps now removed, the bridge’s familiar color and structure are visible once more, giving the community a glimpse of the progress made during the 18-month restoration.
Work is now shifting to the final phase of the project. Crews still need to install about 1,166 feet of wood decking, add new LED lighting and electrical wiring, plus complete a few minor paint touch-ups. So far, it has already seen 1,203 feet of decking installed, large-scale sandblasting, painting completed, and nearly all steel repairs finished. The good news is that everything remains on schedule, with the beloved bridge expected to reopen in late September to welcome walkers and visitors back to one of Chattanooga’s most recognizable landmarks.
