Visitors to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park can expect continued improvements as the park moves forward with another phase of its major roadway restoration project. The National Park Service recently awarded a construction contract for work on Dyer Road which was completed last May 8 and the Snodgrass Hill Road in the Chickamauga Battlefield area with construction scheduled to begin September 22. Once work there is complete, crews will move to Snodgrass Hill Road. Park officials say only one road will be closed at a time to help minimize disruptions for visitors exploring the historic battlefield.
The ongoing upgrades are part of a larger $8.1 million restoration effort focused on preserving the park’s historic roadways while improving safety and accessibility. Crews have already repaved roads and parking areas, repaired drainage systems, and stabilized road shoulders throughout the Georgia side of the park. Brotherton Road also remains closed for rehabilitation work that began earlier this year and is expected to finish by October 30. All remaining roadway construction is scheduled to wrap up by November 21. The project continues to protect one of the country’s most important Civil War landmarks while making it easier for hikers, cyclists, runners, and families to enjoy the park year-round.
