The revitalization of the James A. Henry Building, which has a key role in the Westside Community Evolves project, just received a $2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This funding will support energy-efficient renovations with plans to transform the building into a resilience hub as part of the DOE’s Local Government Energy Program. The upgrade aligns with Scenic City’s Climate Action Plan to include high-performance windows, LED lighting, roof insulation and a streamlined chiller system, which is expected to reduce energy costs while providing essential community services like additional Head Start seats, classrooms and a health clinic, turning it to a cornerstone of urban sustainability.
Beyond energy savings, this will bring workforce development opportunities to the community that will enhance job creation and employment services. Chattanooga is one of 12 localities selected for this federal initiative with a DOE-sponsored professional for 18 months who will spearhead the technical support throughout the project.
By investing in building efficiency, renewable energy and infrastructure upgrades, this initiative not only modernizes the establishment but also sets a precedent for clean energy advancements in underserved communities to combat climate change and foster economic growth.
