The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) has awarded $1 million through its Transportation Network Growth Opportunity (TNGO) initiative to support cutting-edge mobility research and development projects. The two newly funded collaborations include the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s partnerships with DENSO and LG CNS which focuses on artificial intelligence-driven traffic security systems and smart crosswalk technology to enhance pedestrian safety and emergency response. Its main purpose is to reduce collisions, protect vulnerable road users, and harness real-time data for highly efficient city infrastructure—all key steps toward establishing Tennessee as the Southeast’s top hub for automotive and mobility R&D.
The initiative has $7.5 million in total funding which aims to align university expertise with private industry and public stakeholders to drive innovation, economic growth, and public safety. This investment marks a major milestone in the state’s journey to becoming the nation’s premier destination for engineering, innovation, and intelligent transportation systems. As Gov. Bill Lee and TNECD Commissioner Stuart McWhorter emphasized these partnerships to exemplify the powerful potential of collaboration between academia, industry, and government that is meant to bring prolific change and opportunity to Tennessee communities.
