In a bittersweet turn for the Downtown dining scene, three iconic restaurants—Ernest Chinese, Thai Smile, and Taco Mac—have announced their permanent closures. Each establishment played a unique role in the city’s culinary identity, offering locals and visitors alike a taste of diverse cuisine from bold Asian fusion to classic pub fare.
Ernest Chinese, known for its modern take on traditional dishes, will serve its final meal on July 13. While Thai Smile, a 20-year staple on Market Street, closed yesterday, citing the non-renewal of their lease. Lastly, Taco Mac, a go-to game day hangout since 1998, quietly ended its service on June 22 which marked the end of an era for food lovers in the area.
These closures are more than just lost eateries—they’re a heartfelt farewell to memories made over shared plates and local camaraderie. As we say goodbye for now, we honor the legacy they leave behind and the joy they brought to the table.
