Nestled at the base of Lookout Mountain, St. Elmo is one of Chattanooga’s most charming and historic neighborhoods. Long before it became a popular destination, the area was home to Cherokee, Muscogee, and other Native American communities. Its name came from the bestselling 1866 novel St. Elmo by Augusta Jane Evans, who was inspired by the mountain’s resemblance to a castle she had seen in Naples. The community grew rapidly after the Yellow Fever outbreak of 1878, when many Chattanoogans sought refuge in the cooler mountain air. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and known for its beautifully preserved architecture and small-town feel.

While its history is fascinating, St. Elmo is also one of the best places in the city to spend a relaxing day. From local coffee shops and scenic trails to iconic attractions and great dining, there’s plenty to explore from morning to night.

No visit is complete without riding the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. More than 125 years old, it remains one of the steepest passenger railways in the world and offers incredible views along the way.

When hunger strikes, stop by The Hummus Bowl for fresh gyros, wraps, and Mediterranean-inspired bowls. Families may enjoy Mr. T’s Pizza & Ice Cream, a longtime local favorite.
