A familiar piece of Chattanooga’s skyline is already undergoing a major transformation. Demolition of AT&T Field, the former home of the Chattanooga Lookouts, got underway in July and is expected to take about 12 weeks to complete. The project began with the removal of the iconic scoreboard, followed by the gradual dismantling of the ballpark. Once demolition is finished, the site will be graded, reseeded, and maintained as green space until redevelopment plans move forward. While the stadium itself is coming down, the memories tied to it will remain. River City Company auctioned off memorabilia and stadium pieces, giving fans a chance to keep a small piece of Chattanooga baseball history. For many residents, AT&T Field was more than just a ballpark. It was a place where families gathered, unforgettable moments were shared, and future stars like Elly De La Cruz once took the field.
As Scenic City says goodbye to the old ballpark, attention is turning to what comes next. River City Company’s Hawk Hill vision includes a mixed-use neighborhood with housing, restaurants, shops, offices, hotels, parks, trails, and public gathering spaces. Plans also call for improved walkability between downtown, the riverfront, and the hilltop, along with scenic overlooks, a pedestrian promenade, and an outdoor music venue. Project leaders are currently searching for a master developer to help bring the long-term vision to life while coordinating with nearby riverfront improvements. Although redevelopment is still several years away, the transition represents a new chapter for the area. The city’s minor league baseball tradition continues at the new stadium, while the former AT&T Field site prepares for a future that blends community spaces, housing, and economic growth.
